I need to explain. This is for my small but devoted followers (by which I mean my children and my husband) because I am always making things up as I go and then I ask, "Should I make this again?" And (sometimes) they say yes and then I completely forget all about it. If I mess it up I remember but the wild successes are pretty much lost forever. Until now! Isn't modern technology amazing? Imagine before blogs? What did people do? Use paper? No, clearly that would be far too difficult.

kitchen essentials: getting started
So first things first.
What you need in any kitchen:
1) Space
2) those food preppers who dice everything up into little prep cups and set it out so you can just toss them in (the cup contents not the preppers)
oh, I forgot this is not my fantasy blog
1) yeast (OK, you don't need this all the time but you can see where I'm going)
2) salt and whole pepper corns
3) olive oil
4) cheap wine (more on that later)
5) basic baking supplies (flour, sugar, baking soda and powder, shortening)
6) BUTTER
7) eggs
8) herbs plants: parsely, sage, rosemary and thyme. Also mint which should not have been left out of the song and surprisingly did not invade it. (not actually in the kitchen of course)
9) canned tomatoes; whole, stewed, diced, pasted, pureed or crushed. Or all the above.
10) whole oats, raisins, chocolate, NUTS
and some sorts of main ingrediants although clearly you could survive on just the above
as for the hardware
1) spoons of all sizes
2) a pastry cutter
3) bowls of all sizes -preferably microwavable and oven safe
4) knives of all sizes, but especially a good chopper and a little paring knife
5) a good mixer (don't get me started)
6) a deep covered baking dish
7) non stick muffin pans
8) a small skillet
9) a large frying pan
10) a microplane for grating (you will never go back to those 4 sided things)
11) at least a cleared cutting board
12) measuring spoons and cups, multiple sets of each, in cheerful colors
